ayla's fiancé Andy’s last name is the same as hers. Sera, her best friend, is very dubious about them getting married, and urges her to research her heritage. When she does, Layla finds out that it is highly likely that Andy's ancestors owned Layla's and that his family benefited financially when slavery was outlawed.

his starts her on a quest to verify what really happened, and we learn a lot about how one's ancestry can be researched. Not everything can be uncovered, but in the process, Layla finds family she never knew before, and a way to move forward.
W
hile I found this story dragged a bit in the beginning, I was glad I stuck with it. I appreciated the wisdom of Layla's elders and their palpable love for their family. Layla had an important question to answer. Just as important was her decision about how to proceed once she finished her research.
