Such A Clever Girl
is billed as '
A Tense Domestic Thriller of Hidden Secrets, Unraveled Family Mysteries, and a Race Against Time in a Town Haunted by Its Past
', which sums it up pretty well.
T
he haunting past is the unsolved mystery of the sudden disappearance of the wealthy Tanner family (Patrick, Victoria, wild sociopathic teen Aubrey and younger Noah). The mystery included arson of a family business and a bloodstain in the family home. Readers are introduced to three women, who encountered each other at the family home at the time of the disappearance. Each has their own secret relating to the events of that day, unshared with the others (or the authorities) but very troubling to them ever since. They are: bossy psychologist Stella, anxious teacher Marni, and earth mother/café owner Hanna. Townsfolk have long assumed that the Tanners were all killed.
A
s the story opens fifteen years later, after the death of controlling patriarch Xavier Tanner, Aubrey Tanner reappears. Where has she been all this time and what does she know? It's soon clear that Aubrey has come back to stir up trouble, and she's very, very good at it. Secrets start to be revealed, beginning at the reading of Xavier's will. There's a kidnapping - and Tanner bodies begin to be finally found. Secret passageways are discovered in a Tanner mansion, revealing more possibilities on how the tragedy unfolded.
T
he story shifts constantly between the points of view of the three women and Aubrey, an approach that I found rather confusing. However, between them, they do manage to uncover the truth of this very cold case and identify the killer who soon finds out '
what happened when you mess with dangerous women.
' There are plenty of surprises for all concerned (reader included) before it's all over.
