s the story opens, Tony realizes that they've been found. They escape in a stolen plane. When the fuel line is hit by gunfire, they crash land in the wilderness, pursuit not far behind. Badly injured, Tony sends the kids on without him. The plane belonged to rancher Nick Lorenzo, who also searches, helped by his son Jason (who was close to Kris).

he children's aunt, Ruby McIntyre, had fled her family for the army years before, and now is a successful architect. She had cut contact with her niece and nephew on Tony's insistence. Now, Nick calls her (as Tony's emergency contact) and Ruby flies up to join his search. All three groups ride or trek through the wilderness.
