t's written from alternating viewpoints, those of Ava Harrison and Maggie Mae Brightwell. Ava, whose ex-boyfriend Alexander died a month before, receives a mysterious letter, offering her a job as a live-in caretaker for an older man and his cat in beachside Driftwood, Alabama. She heads there from Cincinnati. She's to be interviewed at a coffeehouse, Magpie's. At the door is a man, Sam, and his dog, Norman.
M
aggie is kept busy with Magpie's, but worries about her aging, eccentric father Desmond, who is considering selling the coffeehouse. Its name is also Maggie's nickname as she picks up shiny or unusual odds and ends - curiosities that make magic happen. Of course, Ava gets the job, moves in with Desmond, and gradually becomes a valued member of the community, lets go of the past, and finds a new family.
