I
'd heard of J.D. Robb's very popular futuristic romantic suspense series starring hard-nosed homicide Lieutenant Eve Dallas, but this is the first I've read.
Encore in Death
is the fifty-sixth in the series! Eve is very happily married to the enigmatic and devilishly handsome Roarke, the richest man on the planet, but keeps her job and independence.
T
wenty-five years after the unexpected death of
Upstage
star Leah Rose propelled her understudy, Eliza Lane, into the spotlight, Eliza and her husband Brant Fitzhugh throw an A-lister gala in their home to highlight the upcoming
Upstage
revival. Pushed to sing a song, Eliza hands Brant her glass. He drinks from it - and dies of cyanide poisoning.
E
ve and her team investigate, and wonder who was really the target - Brant (loved by all) or Eliza (who's pushy and exacting, and made a few enemies along the way)? Roarke does some financial digging as well. Eve starts to wonder if this murder is an encore to the death a quarter century before. Of course she gets to the surprising truth, with Roarke at her back, as always.
