opens on Christmas Eve, 2014. Eighty-five-year-old Miriam Caravasios, suffering from dementia and living in an old memory of meeting her lover Theo for a midnight tryst, walks out onto ice surrounding her Mount Desert Island seaside estate in Maine. The ice breaks and she dies.

. She had come there from assisted living for Christmas with her live-in aide, Adam. Her daughter, Theodora Lockwood, was already there with her confused and vulnerable granddaughter Delphine (who has been secretly dating Adam). Mimi's other daughter Diana and her son Richard (divorced three times) are also present. It's a dysfunctional family, who barely get along.

he story moves back and forth in time, to reveal Mimi's earlier life and the great romance that defined it. After her death, Adam proposes and Delphine accepts. Mimi's old nanny dies, leaving a letter for Del. Then she learns that she's inherited the bulk of her grandmother's estate, and begins to suspect that Mimi's death was not an accident.

he starts looking for answers, and finds some to questions she hadn't even asked. Like her grandmother, Delphine steps onto thin ice, but her story has a different ending.
