We Know You Remember
as the second in Tove Alsterdal's nordic noir
High Coast
series, set in Sweden. Both are translated by Alice Menzies.
D
etective Eira Sjödin is the series lead. She lived with, and cared for her mother, whose increasing dementia has forced a move to a care home. Trying to make this happen, Eira and her younger assistant August Engelhardt are assigned a missing persons case. Hans Runne, an actor, hasn't been heard from for three weeks.
L
ater, they're called out to an abandoned house, where they find an emaciated corpse in the basement. Violent Crimes Detective Georg Georgsson leads the investigation and identifies the man as Hans Runne. Georgsson, to whom Eira is attracted, wants her to join his Violent Crimes team and move - something now possible when her mother is settled.
E
ira, Georg and his team follow a variety of leads. Eira finds a similar, older case, where the victim survived. Then Georg disappears and it becomes a race against time to locate him before he also dies in the dark. Luckily, he has Eira on his trail. This is an intriguing and inventive noir series, one I intend to keep following.
