The Twelve Jays of Christmas
as the thirty-first in Donna Andrews cozy Meg Langslow mystery series. Episodes often happen around festive events, this time the wedding of Meg's beloved brother Rob to Delaney. They had hoped for a simple wedding but their indomitable mothers have bigger plans - including more peacocks!
M
eg's busy notebook is filled with too many wedding tasks when her nephew Kevin (a cyber nerd who lives in her basement) asks for her help as well. Kevin and his friend Casey have started a true-crime podcast,
Virginia Crime Time
, focused on cold cases. Kevin's problem is that he thinks they've stirred up trouble, since a car without headlights tried to run Casey down.
M
eg starts digging into the podcast's cases, trying to find the connection. There's a filling station murder (it's believed the man convicted took the fall for someone else); a cheating scandal at Caerphilly College's business school; and the disappearance of up-and-coming young singer Maddy duPlaine. None look promising.
N
evertheless, readers know that Meg will get to the truth of all matters - when not dealing with cranky feral peacocks - and she does, with canine assistance from Spike. This episode ends on a most unusual, but beautiful wedding.
