Cold, Cold Bones is the twenty-first in Kathy Reichs' deservedly popular series featuring forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan. She shares her time between Charlotte, North Carolina and Montreal, Quebec, working in both locations. Tempe's relationship with PI Andrew Ryan has evolved and they share their apartments whenever they are in the same city.

As this episode opens, Tempe focuses on her daughter Katy, a combat veteran back from the army and struggling. At Tempe's home, they find a package, with a human eyeball inside. Even odder, GPS coordinates (for a Benedictine monastery) are etched on it. They call detective Erskine 'Skinny' Slidell. Though retired, he volunteers on cold cases, as well as partnering with Ryan.

When Tempe and Skinny find a female corpse at the coordinates, newbie Detective Donna Henry is assigned to the case. More bodies are found, the only connection their mimicry of remains Tempe found in the past - what on earth is going on and who is targeting her? It all seems very personal. Then Katy disappears after mentioning a creep in her vicinity. Tempe is frantic.

Luckily, Tempe has Skinny's help and then Ryan's. She needs it, as a serial killer is moving closer and closer into her own orbit. Can she save herself and Katy?
