E
ver felt the need to escape during the pandemic? John Scalzi, who can always be counted on for an unusual, absorbing read, gives his protagonist the ultimate escape in
The Kaiju Preservation Society
.
S
calzi's lead is young Jamie Gray, who loses his startup job after Covid starts, and is demoted to driving for food delivery apps. Then he delivers to his old friend Tom, who works for KPS, an animal rights organization. They are short staffed for an imminent field visit. Jamie takes the well paid job (working with '
very large, very wild, very dangerous animals
'). He's soon sent, with other newbies, on the field visit (via Greenland) - to an alternate dimension, where the massive (and endangered) Kaiju roam!
T
heir objective is to keep the kaiju in and keep humans out of their world. Jamie soon learns how dangerous his new job is, the importance of weapons training and the RLH (run like hell) protocol. He survives the kaiju, who actually are walking nuclear bombs, but then faces hostile human forces. There are deaths and the battle, along with a kaiju (Bella), moves back to Earth. Time's running out fast, as Bella is ready to explode all over Labrador. Can they bring her back before she does and can Jamie defeat the real monster?
I
'll happily read anything by John Scalzi and
The Kaiju Preservation Society
is another winner, absolutely not to be missed.
