It is chained to the ocean deeps by heavy gold links. The villagers covet the gold and send for magic workers. After many charlatans Lyo appears. He is a real mage and succeeds in undoing the chain ... but turns it into periwinkles. Then the sea-dragon comes on shore. The Changeling Sea is a romantic, magical tale, told with McKillip's light and deft style. Peri longs for what she cannot have, but instead ends up with a king's gratitude and true love.
