Punished with the task of cleaning out a basement closet in St. Bernadette’s Catholic school, Maeve finds a pack of tarot cards. Her popularity spikes when she's sought after to do readings for many other girls at the school. But this isn't your normal tarot deck. It has one extra card, a very powerful and creepy one called The Housekeeper. As all this develops, Maeve gets very close to Lily's older brother Roe, who is gender-fluid. Then comes an argument over a tarot reading at school when Maeve wishes aloud for Lily to disappear - and she does. Maeve's schoolmates blame her but not nearly as much as she blames herself. She doesn't share what happened with Roe though, despite her guilt. The police are called in but have no success in locating Lily. Eventually Maeve learns more of the historical origins of The Housekeeper card. With help from her new friend Fiona and from Roe, she risks everything to bring back Lily and make amends.
