T
he unusual premise of Bonnie Kistler's
The Cage
- and the question it raises - pulls reader interest through the story. The novel opens in the Marketplace Tower, where fashion giant Claudine de Martineau International has its offices thirty floors up.
T
wo women are about to leave work late in the day - the HR director and a company lawyer. They enter the elevator together. Next the lawyer, Shay Lambert, calls 911. The power's out, the intercom isn't working and they're in darkness. Lucy Barton-Jones is with her but seems unable to talk. When the elevator door finally opens again, Lucy has been shot dead. Murder or suicide?
S
hay is detained by the police and interviewed by Detectives Riley and Cruz. Meanwhile, readers see corporate executives scrambling to hide evidence and '
prep the husband
'. Lucy had threatened to '
burn this place down
'. The plot thickens fast and it becomes clear that corporate executives plan to position it as murder and Shay as the perp.
T
he story moves back and forth in time to reveal what led up to the death in the elevator. Readers learn that Shay had uncovered where the company was making its money - and it wasn't from fashion. We root for Shay as her life goes steadily downhill ... until it doesn't.
The Cage
is thoroughly engrossing, with a final, apt twist at the very end.
