The Punishment She Deserves
as the twenty-first in her appealing and very popular police procedural series starring New Scotland Yard Acting Superintendent Thomas Lynley and Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers.
O
ther officers have come to share center stage with Lynley and Havers. DS Winston Nkata plays a strong part in this episode as well, as does Lynley's good friend Deborah St. James. Indeed as this story opens, Deborah is asked to take on a challenging project that soon pulls her into the heart of the mystery.
R
eaders meet Tanimola Bankole, whose immigrant father Abeo has high expectations of him, including that he should wed a chosen Nigerian girl. So Tani will not tell him about his relationship with gorgeous Sophie Franklin. Abeo also has plans for Tani's younger sister Simisola to have a genital mutilation operation illegal in the U.K..
D
S Mark Phinney and his wife Pietra have it hard as they spend a great deal of their time caring for their severely disabled daughter Lilybet. Mark is having an affair with a subordinate. Lynley gets involved after the death Phinney's lover. She'd been investigating female genital mutilation.
T
he author weaves all these stories together into a puzzler of an investigation that's as hard to solve for the reader as for the police. There are quite a few characters (and their lives) to follow, making it rather a tome. However, I enjoy spending time in Lynley's world and followed the tale to its very surprising conclusion.
