Meg Long's Cold the Night, Fast the Wolves is an action packed YA science fiction novel, set on the corporate controlled world of Tundar, a frozen wasteland rich in exocarbon, where Sena survives by scavenging and picking pockets.

Since her mothers died, she has been alone aside from her their old sled mechanic. Sena's moms were renowned sled racers (one of them a scavver from the wilderness, who taught Sena to survive there). Scavvers had been reviled by the corpos since the Scavver War two centuries before. Sena is trying to save enough to pay her way off planet.

As the story opens, Sena escapes pursuit through a manhole into an empty pen where fighting animals are kept - but the pen is not empty. This is her first encounter with red wolf Iska who will ultimately save her. Her friend Temur rescues her from the cage. Then Boss Kalba insists that she patch up his prize fighter, Iska - if she fails she must be on his racing team.

As the red wolf heals, a bond slowly forms between them. And Sena does end up racing, but not for Kalba. Circumstances lead to her helping offworlders, led by a professor, who plans to study exocarbon. Sena races with his team to the exocarbon site in a wilderness filled with danger, from ice goblins, enormous bears - and competing racers.

Cold the Night, Fast the Wolves is a very exciting story on a well developed - and perilous - world. By the end, Sena has found her own quest to pursue, Iska by her side.
