Author Stringfellow says she 'was tired of white Americans telling me and mine what makes this country great. We make this country great. I realized I wanted to write a Black story. hat also means I wanted to write an American one.' Memphis is the result of that impetus, and it pulses with life.

Three generations of women are featured: Hazel, Miriam and Joan - and swirling around them are: Gus, Dawn and Mya. Stringfellow weaves their stories in a very nonlinear fashion which, though sometimes a bit confusing, serves to highlight the struggles and strengths of each character.

Each woman has a powerful presence that portends survival despite all the serious obstacles that are put before them. The community of women surrounding them is like a chorus, there to help, to console or to celebrate. This is a chronicle of injustice and excellence, a most interesting read.
