F
eline fans will appreciate Cate Conte's sixth episode in her
Cat Cafe
cozy mystery series,
Gone but Not Furgotten
. The lead, Maddie James, has renovated her grandfather's house on Daybreak Island into a cat café,
JJ's House of Purrs
.
M
addie offers rescue cats to cuddle or adopt, and has two co-owners - her Grandpa Leo and business partner Ethan Birdsong (who manages the cafe in the converted garage). She's also in a relationship with dog groomer Lucas.
T
his episode opens with Maddie attempting tai chi under the supervision of her ageless teacher, Cass Hendricks. He signs her up (reluctantly on her part) for a meditation retreat. He mentions that he's been working in Fisherman's Cove. Later, Cass calls her from there, asking for help.
T
urns out that the older lady (Laurel McKenna) Cass wanted Maddie to help was an animal hoarder. There are countless felines inside and outdoors - and Laurel is dead. Though at first it seems an accident, Maddie suspects it was not.
M
addie marshals all her contacts and resources to help catch, house, heal and foster the cats while investigating what soon turns out to be murder. When someone close to her comes under suspicion, she turns to Grandpa Leo for help.
I
t's a cute story but I have to say that the kitties and their fates engaged me even more than the mystery itself.
