Heather Morris (author of The Tattooist of Auschwitz and Cilka's Journey) now brings us another heart wrenching historical inspired by a true story, Three Sisters. It begins in 1929 Slovakia, where three small sisters (Cibi, Magda Libi) promise their father to always take care of each other and to stick together. He dies soon after that from a Great War wound.

Fast forward to 1942, when young Jews are being taken from Slovakia to work for the Germans. Magda is hospitalized with a fever. Cibi is away in a training program to learn the skills necessary for life in Palestine. But when Cibi learns that fifteen-year-old Libi has been selected, she goes with her younger sister and does her best to protect her through the horrors that follow in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Any who don't appear fit and healthy are selected and never seen again.

Back at home, a friend hides Magda when the Germans come looking, but eventually they come for more than only the young. Magda is separated from her family and also ends up in Birkenau, reunited with her sisters. Later, their mother and grandfather arrive too, but are selected. The sisters support each other and do survive, with some help from a German, trying to hang on to a scrap of humanity. Then comes their freedom march.

Back in Slovakia, they find their home occupied. After further adventures, they all end up in Israel where they hope to make new lives, still together though all find partners. But there are old secrets and fears that need to be shared, and ghosts to be settled before they can be content. Though often hard to read, Three Sisters is an inspiring novel. And don't miss the Author's Note at the end that introduces the real people her story is based on.
