During these strange pandemic times, with quarantines and the need to use masks and keep ourselves safe from the virus, many people have opted to take trips to interesting places in their cars, instead of flying. Great American Road Trips: Scenic Drives is full of descriptions by travelers of some of the best attractions in the United States. The book is divided into sections of the country (including the West, Southwest, Midwest, Southeast, and Northeast) and each road trip is illustrated with full color pictures of some of the sights on that trip. Each also has a sidebar called Points of Interest.

A good example is the road trip along the Big Sur Coast. It begins with advice to the reader of 'sheer cliffs, hairpin turns and majestic ocean views,' and the sidebar gives information that includes the length of the trip along the coast and possible side trips. Important additional information is included in 'Words to the Wise - Rainstorms will sometimes cause landslides. Morning fogs are frequent in summer. Strong currents, cold water and surf along much of the coast make swimming extremely dangerous.' Some sidebars of other destinations will also mention places to stay along the way or nearby, places to eat, fun facts, and attractions not to be missed. Some of these trips can be done in a day, but many will take longer, especially if you take advantage of the interesting side trips.

This book has such beautiful photographs (some of which take up two full pages) that those alone might tempt people to take one or more of the road trips. However, the written accounts add important information about each location. Having lived as a child in South Dakota, grown up in California, and later lived in Colorado, Massachusetts, and Virginia, I've been lucky enough to travel extensively in many parts of the country, and I was delighted with the pictures and accounts that included places I enjoyed visiting. I hope to make it to some of the other attractions in the future.
