opens, Lila Ridgefield has concluded that her controlling husband Aaron (a pillar of the community and beloved high school teacher) is a monster, and is tearing their bedroom apart - readers wonder what did he do? They soon learn that Lila found (and watched) Aaron's intimate videos of female students.

As the plot progresses, readers learn more of Lila's dark back story. She involves her good friend, Tobias, her former law partner. She wonders more and more about the fate of several young women who have gone missing in the area. Aaron's brother Jared shows up and muddies the waters.
