What makes this cozy mystery series so appealing is that its characters are all so likeable - at a time when genuine niceness seems in such short supply in our world. As A Garland of Bones (22nd in the series) opens, it's December in the Mississippi Delta. There, Sarah Booth welcomes 'Change that brought equality for every person, no matter their race, gender, creed, religion, or sexual identification. From the remnants of the old South, a new South was finally being birthed.'

Tinkie has planned a special holiday trip for her friends and their partners - Christmas shopping, tree lighting, and a Wassail Fest in the river town of Columbus. They have a wonderful time, despite an escalating series of accidents that plagues the town, but then work intervenes as Sarah Booth and Tinkie (keen despite her pregnancy) are hired to investigate before someone is seriously injured. When two women fall off a boat in the river, and only one is rescued, the pressure intensifies.

The accidents continue, and our reveling friends continue to have a good time. Of course, they also do close the case which has a surprising resolution, and Sarah Booth and Coleman get to spend Christmas back home, with Sweetie Pie, Pluto - and Jitty.
