In Keep Sharp: Build a Better Brain at Any Age, neurosurgeon and CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta offers readers what is essentially an owner's manual for brain maintenance. Gupta tells us that 'The brain can be continuously and consistently enriched throughout your life no matter your age or access to resources.' Dementia does not have to remain the 'bogeyman of old age' and 'cognitive decline is not inevitable.'

The book continues in three parts: The Brain: Meet Your Inner Black Box; The Brain Trust: How Not to Lose Your Mind; and The Diagnosis: What to Do, How to Thrive. Part 1 explains the brain, how memory works, normal and abnormal brain aging, aging myths, and how the brain can rewire itself. Part 2 goes into five aspects of improving brain function - Move, Discover, Relax, Nourish, Connect. It covers relevant research, and offers a twelve week program to follow, in order to reinvent the way you live and keep a sharp mind. Part 3 covers diagnosis and treatment of brain disease, early signs, treatments, and care needed for caregivers, whom the author calls 'the invisible second patient'.

Each chapter begins with a quote and Mark Twain's 'Be careful about reading health books. You may die of a misprint' made me smile - and is very relevant in this age of misinformation. Sanjay Gupta's conclusion to his very informative volume (which I will need to re-read to properly digest) talks of The Bright Future that will come about through research that is well underway. I highly recommend Keep Sharp to all interested in maintaining and improving their brain health.
