Molly Clarke's life has been in tatters for five years. She drove the car that accidentally killed her small daughter Annie, and is unable to forgive herself. Her twenty-one year old daughter Nicole was expelled from school. She 'runs for miles and miles', sleeps all day, and seems to hate her mother. Her teen son Evan rejects her, and her husband John is absent from home as often as he can manage it.

Molly simply wants to walk away from it all, but when she starts to do so, she gets something she never bargained for, and certainly didn't deserve. She's driving home from watching her son Evan's baseball game (he pretends not to see her, embarrassed by her visits to his boarding school). She runs out of gas. A man in a truck, with an angelic little girl (Alice) beside him, offers her a ride into town.

He doesn't take her into town. Instead he takes her to a remote house behind a fence and locked gate. He had stalked her and now won't let her leave. When she doesn't show up at home, John offers a reward for information on Molly's whereabouts and a million for her safe return. John also hires an investigator. Nic feels that she helped drive her mother away, so starts looking hard herself.

Molly makes an attempt to escape and fails but learns that that's how Alice's 'first mommy died.' She almost gives up, until she realizes that Nic's investigation is putting her daughter at risk too. Can she save Nicole? It makes for a creepy, gripping read, at the end of which Molly concludes 'There are so many shades of gray that sometimes I feel like is one long, beautiful, cloudy day.'
