Death at High Tide
is the first in an
Island Sisters
mystery series. After Evie Mead's husband Robert dies suddenly from a heart attack, she learns that she may own the rights to an old hotel on Tregarrick Rock, one of the Isles of Scilly and a '
birdwatcher's paradise
'. It's reached by ferry from Penzance, Cornwall.
W
hile waiting for more information from her lawyer, Evie and her elegant sister Margot decide to visit the hotel and check it out themselves. Wanting to be anonymous, they pose as film producer and location scout. The hotel has one other guest, famed photojournalist Alex Karlsson. They meet Cador Ferris, his father Jago, who runs the hotel, his mother Tegan, staff members Vanessa and Dennis, and elderly Lily.
T
here's soon, not one but two murders and the foreigners are prime suspects. So Evie starts investigating and uncovers secrets on all sides. The setting for
Death at High Tide
is intriguing, but the characterizations (especially that of DS Patricia Williamson) so off-key that I found it hard to finish the story.
