Don't Look Down follows One Small Sacrifice as the second in Hilary Davidson's Shadows of New York series starring NYPD detective Sheryn Sterling and her partner, Rafael Mendoza. Though I missed the first in the series, that in no way diminished my enjoyment of this episode.

As the novel opens, Jo Greaver (who built a cosmetics start-up into a successful international company) lugs a duffel full of fifty thousand dollars to a meeting with her blackmailer. The man takes her money and then fires at her, but she gets off a shot before she flees the scene. Back at her office, she receives a package containing a battered laptop, smeared with blood. It belonged to Jo's dead sister Lori.

NYPD detective Sheryn Sterling and her partner, Rafael Mendoz, catch the case after Andray Baxter is found shot through the heart in the apartment where the meeting happened. They soon learn that Andray had an appointment with Jo when he died. She's arrested after they find the murder weapon, but doesn't recognize the picture police show her of the dead man. Jo's fiance, Cal McGarran, refuses to pay her bail because she lied to him, but has her back later.

Suspense builds as the case against Jo strengthens, aided by Cal's mother, 'a shark in a Chanel suit.' But Sheryn has her doubts and acts on them, tracing a surprising knot of relationships in the case, which is further complicated by arson and another body. The conclusion is dramatic and a shocker. Don't miss this one.
