Were you aware that the writings of Agatha Christie are only surpassed in volume by the Bible and the works of William Shakespeare? Murder She Said includes a plethora of Miss Marple's most quotable observations. Have you a friend who is a fan of Miss Marple? What a lovely Christmas gift this makes - or possibly a gift to yourself. That is allowed, you know.

In The Body in the Library, Miss Marple muses that 'most people – and I do not exclude policemen – are far too trusting for this wicked world. They believe what is told them. I never do. I am afraid I always like to prove a thing for myself.' How relevant that is in this post-truth era!

More words of wisdom: 'People's memories are very short – A lucky thing, I always think.' I can't resist one more: 'The most nervous people are far more brave than one really thinks they are.' This is a delightful volume, especially read by the fireside, with a small glass of something alcoholic, (remember I said small) and a tray of finger sandwiches.
