B
ark of Night
is the 19th in David Rosenfelt's canine mystery series starring reluctant defense lawyer/investigator Andy Carpenter. He's wealthy and charmingly lazy, but is regularly drawn in to taking on cases, because of the dogs involved in them.
T
his time it's a tiny French bulldog named Truman, who was left with Andy's veterinarian with instructions to euthanize. But Truman is perfectly healthy and the man who dropped him off was not his owner. Said owner was murdered!
L
aurie sums up the situation thus: '
Two murders are committed very close together in time, one near Philadelphia and one here. The man suspected in one murder turns up with the second victim's dog, under circumstances that give new meaning to the word
suspicious
.
'
N
aturally, Andy gets involved in the investigation and a murder trial. He and his helpers uncover a trail of homeless murders across the country, and a link to the mob. A trip to Florida results in another death, involving Marcus this time. There are more murders, and the DEA get involved.
A
s expected, Andy wins his case. A victory party unfolds at Charlie's Sports Bar. And Truman finds a home. It's always fun to read one of Rosenfelt's canine legal mysteries and
Bark of Night
is no exception to that rule.
