ate has been plagued by nightmares for the four months following the death of his best friend Dodge along with Dodge's dad and younger brother in a boating accident that could easily have been avoided. What makes it worse is that Dodge had pressed Nate to join them and he had refused, feeling it was a reckless and foolish trip. If he'd gone, he might have made a difference.

he families shared many summers together at adjoining camps. Now, Nate has planned to go there in winter, without his father for the first time. Another friend was to join him but was grounded at the last minute. Nate doesn't tell his parents that he's heading off alone. When he gets close, he discovers his family's cabin is occupied by strangers, who recently escaped from a maximum-security prison. It becomes a struggle to survive in a blizzard and get word out.

long the way, Nate learns a great deal about himself, his family, and his friend Dodge, both strengths and weaknesses.
