. It involves a dark secret, which arose in the town of Nusstead, involving two young people in love, and an ambitious politician (Helen Greenlaw) with big plans for her future.

he young people separated. Marianne moved to London, enjoyed a successful career, married Sam (a History of Architecture lecturer), and they had a rather fragile daughter, Honor (with mental health issues). Marianne remained friends with her boyfriend Jesse, though his feelings were always stronger. He married as well, with children of his own.

ow Marianne's on sabbatical and staying in Nusstead, as her mother is dying. So what is the dark secret at the core of this novel? Readers find out late in the story, which moves back and forth in time to gradually reveal what happened, and that all was not as it seemed. It centers on the closure of a lunatic asylum, Nazareth Hospital, in East Anglia and its effect on the local economy and community.
