Bev Thomas's psychological thriller, A Good Enough Mother, tells the story of skilled psychotherapist Ruth Hartland, Director of a Trauma Unit, whose failure to seek healing that she desperately needs, leads to disaster.

Why does Ruth need help? Her beloved son Tom, who has never fit in, disappeared a year and a half before the story opens. It becomes clear to readers how Ruth's own childhood traumas caused her to try to shield Tom and to ignore Tom's successful twin sister Carolyn. Now Ruth's marriage has fractured, her son is missing, and she is estranged from her daughter.

It's a new patient who becomes the trigger for Ruth's life spiraling out of control. Dan Griffin, traumatized by a vicious attack and by his mother's early desertion, looks very like her son Tom. As Ruth deals (badly) with his therapy sessions, joy enters her life with a new discovery about what happened before Tom disappeared. Then comes the crash.

Though I am not a fan of psychological mysteries, sympathy kept me glued to the pages of A Good Enough Mother as Ruth's situation devolved.
