This is the second DI Adam Fawley mystery. It takes place in Oxford and is told from multiple points of view, news articles, investigative reports, and a first-person account by DI Fawley.

When the renovation of an old townhouse results in an accidental hole in the wall between homes, a young woman and her baby are found locked in the adjoining cellar. Near death, the woman can't speak, suffers PTSD, and can't bear the sight of her own child. The house belongs to an aging academic who is steadily declining into dementia. He claims not to have known she was there. He was afraid to go in the cellar because of the sounds he heard there.

The twisted tale of a kidnapping becomes intertwined with an unsolved murder of a young journalist, Hannah Gardiner, who lived nearby. Detective Inspector Adam Fawley and his unit follow leads that keep them questioning whether anyone involved is really innocent.

Close to Home, the first book in the series, was my favorite mystery of 2018. In this latest installment, DI Fawley's team begins to take shape and their backgrounds are more defined, allowing the reader to sympathize and support them. The plot never stops morphing. Cara Hunter is definitely a writer to watch. I hope this will be a long running series.
