Uneasy Lies the Crown is the thirteenth in Tasha Alexander's historical mystery series starring Lady Emily, now happily married to dashing Colin Hargreaves, a trusted agent of Queen Victoria. On her deathbed in 1901, the monarch slips him a last command - 'One and no more. Dare to know.'

Bodies begin to be discovered, posed in positions mimicking the deaths of English kings, the first one in the Tower of London. Colin receives anonymous letters, appearing to threaten Victoria's successor. Is a serial killer targeting the new king, Edward VII? Unfortunately, Bertie is not a great fan of Colin's, while Inspector Gale warns Lady Emily to 'stop meddling'. Of course, both persist in their investigation.

Interspersed with twentieth century events, the author takes readers back to 1415 where a young wife, Cecily, sends her new husband off to war in France. She is left at the mercy of her supposed friend, Adeline, who ignores her until she finds a use for her.

Lady Emily interviews the widow of one victim, who was clearly abused. Her friend Jeremy, Duke of Bainbridge escorts her to a brothel, where she learns of another abused young woman. Lady Emily seeks justice; does someone else as well? As we expect, Colin and Emily do untangle the mystery, after which Colin is assigned a very special responsibility. I expect it will lead to further adventures for the duo.
