A
young teen's life seems to be at the mercy of her grandmother's whims in
Louisiana's Way Home
- and that grandmother appears to be quite the con artist. Granny has many middle-of-the-night ideas but this time she uproots them both for an extended road trip, never to return to Florida!
L
ouisiana Elefante misses her best friends and worries over the fate of her beloved cat Archie and shared one-eyed dog Buddy. But when her granny's unable to drive because of her aching teeth, the twelve-year-old takes over and gets her to a dentist in the nearest small town, in Georgia. Granny says she's doing it all for Louisiana, to escape the sundering curse that stalks them.
G
ranny has no money but she's always been persuasive. She persuades a cross motel owner to let them stay in return for Louisiana's singing at a funeral. Louisiana meets a local boy, Burke, with a crow, and his loving family, the Allens. When Granny disappears, revealing Louisiana's true history in a devastating note, all seems lost.
F
ortunately there are good people in Georgia, folk who rally around. Burke shows Louisiana the North Star and she finds her way home. Newbery Medalist Kate DiCamillo delivers another charming, whimsical tale in
Louisiana's Way Home
.
