The latest of the Duke Rogers PI Thriller Series just hit my desk. Not a moment too soon. Paul D. Marks previously wrote White Heat (a Shamus award winner) and we get another chance to see what Duke Rogers is up to in Broken Windows.

A young woman climbs to the top of the famous Hollywood sign only to plunge to her death! An undocumented day laborer is murdered! A disbarred lawyer, at the end of his rope, places an ad in a local paper that reads 'Will do anything for money!' What does all that have to do with anything? Well, that lawyer is the disbarred one we all know and love, Duke Rogers, now barely making a living as a PI.

Duke soon finds himself in the middle of the problem of undocumented workers. Duke meets a young woman whose brother has been murdered he was one of those undocumented laborers. His sister, also undocumented, mourns his loss and Duke offers to help her find the murderer. He takes on her case pro bono.

Of course, what can go wrong does. Which leads to a discourse on this very real and current problem of illegal immigrants. Murder, mayhem, suicide, as well as a touch of romance and a reference to pornography, are all wrapped up in the pages of Broken Windows - a good read.
