Secret Undertaking by Mark de Castrique will satisfy most mystery lovers, as well as those of us who really enjoy plots involving small, country towns just reeking of all kinds of crimes. Part-time deputy sheriff Barry Clayton, also the local funeral director, promises to aid the man who made his childhood life miserable by helping in a fundraising parade. What can go wrong does.

The Grand Marshall of the parade is attacked and Barry's Uncle Wayne is shot and left in critical condition. To make matters worse, the body of the local convenience store owner is found with the gunman's food stamp card in his wallet. What the blue blazes is going on? It is discovered that big time crime is happening in small town America. U.S. Marshalls step in and their secretive Witness Protection Program comes into question.

Archie, who had the idea for the fundraising parade, continues to plan to make it happen. Will he be able to carry out his vision of raising a huge sum of money to help the small town prosper? Archie is noted for truly harebrained ideas.

Secret Undertaking is well worth a read. I really like the characters. Having lived with them for the length of six previous novels, they have almost become part of my family. The story takes place in the mountains of western North Carolina – a particular favorite area of mine. It's a beautiful part of the world and written about with obvious love by the author.
