David Hazard wanted nothing more than to be away from Fogland Point in New England. Little Compton on Fogland Point is tiny – just a spit of land jutting into the Atlantic. He knows that anything he or members of his family do is broadcast all over the Point almost as soon as it happens. He is called back to his home to help with his grandmother's care.

Unfortunately, for David as well as his grandmother, she is suffering the onset of dementia. Her conduct is sad as well as comical. But when her next door neighbor and lifelong friend, Emma, is murdered, Grandmother's take on it borders on the hilarious. David considers the murdered woman an aunt. In fact, Grandmother and three of her dearest friends are called the Laughing Sarahs. Now Emma is gone. Not an easy thing to accept or, in his grandmother's case, to understand.

Eccentric millionaire Marcus Rhinegold and his yacht disappear into a dense fog. Then Grandmother's stories - involving Puritans, smugglers, Mafiosi, and rogues - suddenly seem to account for bodies washed up on the shore of Little Compton!

Do her stories have truth woven into the wildness of her remembrances? Where did the millionaire disappear to? Has the man's exit anything to do with Emma's death? Fogland Point will keep you guessing while being entertained by a good book as well as by David's Grandmother's ravings.

While Burgess is well known for non-fiction, as a professor of history in Manhattan, this is his debut novel. As a point of interest his family has lived in the area of the fictional Fogland Point for over 350 years!
