I'm not sure how I missed the first book, but that didn't stop me from enjoying this one. The story takes place in 1941 Reykjavik, a turbulent time in an Iceland under the shadow of war. The series has two leads, local detective Flovent and military policeman Thorson, a Canadian with Icelandic roots. As the story opens, readers are introduced to a traveling salesman, who's not very successful and has problems in his love life. Flovent and Thorson are involved after a man is found shot in the head in a Reykjavík apartment - the murder weapon could well be a US military pistol. Flovent, a rookie in the Criminal Investigation Department, has no experience with murder, but does his best. Thorson, a military policeman, is assigned to the case to protect American interests. The spooks are involved when a cyanide capsule is found at the murder scene. Given rumors of a planned visit by Churchill, enemy espionage activity is of strong concern. The investigators soon discover that the dead man was not the apartment's tenant, who has gone missing. They uncover a family with strong links to the Nazis and a history of dicey genealogical research on young Icelanders that resulted in a death. There's a manipulative femme fatale with military connections. And a charismatic traveling salesman who did his work under false names and with unusual travel patterns. It's an intriguing mystery but what I liked most about the novel is the fascinating window it provides into pre-WW II Iceland. Don't miss this excellent new Indridason series.
