Lorac is published through collaboration between British Library Crime Classics and Poisoned Pen Press. Many almost forgotten English mysteries have thus been brought back to life. I, for one, am glad this partnership exists. Fire in the Thatch is one example that proves that just because a thing is old doesn't mean it should be ignored. Published in 1946, the mystery opens on Nicholas Vaughan's release from the army. He travels to Devon where he hopes to buy land and settle down, working his new purchase with the hopes of marrying when he has made renovations. Unfortunately, some in the area had other plans for this property. When his new home goes up in flames, Vaughan loses his life. A mystery evolves, when no one can be found to notify of Vaughan's death. Who is his heir? Also, questioned is whether Vaughan's demise was accident or murder! E.C.R. Lorac was a pen name for Edith Caroline Rivett who lived from 1894 to 1958. She was highly regarded as a prolific mystery writer. Her books were very popular.
