etective Sergeant Matthew Ryan's boss and mentor, DI Jack Fenwick, stands accused of corruption and has disappeared after an attack on the prisoner transport vehicle that was moving him back to jail after a hearing. As a friend and colleague, Matt is under suspicion as well, and is suspended from duty by the Professional Standards team looking into Jack's case.
O
f course, Matthew investigates himself, even though his being discovered could end his career. An anonymous tip led to the discovery of a cache of arms in Jack's garage - surely they were planted there. And, though the official view is that Jack escaped custody, his wife Hilary and Matt are certain that he's been abducted and they're concerned for his safety.
S
oon the Professional Standards
big guns
take over the case - DS Eloise O'Neil, whom Matt respects, and DS John Maguire, who is '
a nasty piece of work
' and has it in for Matt. With no official role, Matt works with a retired and well respected colleague, Grace Ellis. She in turn enlists a very old, very mysterious friend, Frank Newman.
T
ogether, they learn that Jack was on a trail involving his brother's death on an oil rig long before - where will it lead? Matt's twin sister Caroline has been blind from birth and he feels a responsibility to keep tabs on her well being, though her disability has not held her back. Caroline is both a lawyer and a gifted musician. Soon, she's helping too.
B
efore it's all over, Matt Ryan and Eloise O'Neil follow clues to Norway, then home again for an explosive ending.
The Silent Room
is an intriguing and well developed police procedural, well worth reading.
