This Fallen Prey, which reminded me somewhat of an old TV series, The Prisoner, is the third in Kelley Armstrong's Rockton series, starring Casey Duncan. Though I have missed the first two episodes, that didn't stop me from enjoying this one.

Rockton, which looks like a 'Wild West theme town', is an isolated community, built as a haven for people running from their pasts. Once there, they have no means of communication with the outside world, except with the town council's approval. Homicide detective Casey once shot the drug seller boyfriend who abandoned her to a vicious beating by thugs. She's in a romantic relationship with her boss, Sheriff Eric Dalton, and is very protective of her dog Storm, an eight month old Newfoundland.

As This Fallen Prey opens, a council helicopter arrives carrying a serial thrill killer, Oliver Brady, with instructions that they keep him as a prisoner for six months - for a hefty fee that the town badly needs. Of course, Brady claims innocence, and that his wealthy and powerful stepfather has set him up. Helped by a Rockton insider, Brady takes a hostage and escapes. Murders follow, leaving Casey and Eric unsure who can be trusted. Then the stepfather flies in and the violence escalates.

Kelley Armstrong's novels are always guaranteed to entertain and This Fallen Prey certainly does that, with engaging leads (including Storm), regular surprises, exciting wilderness encounters, a succession of villains, and high tension throughout.
