takes place in Edinburgh, Scotland in the modern day. Delaney Nichols is a bookseller as well as being an amateur sleuth. Not that she advertises her detecting skills. It is just that at times she feels a drive to sort out illegal doings.
S
he works at the Cracked Spine, happily handling old and outdated books, most of which are just old books. But there is sometimes a real find of old, old books that might have great value.
S
everal medical students enter the shop with an armful of old medical journals that they want to sell to help pay their tuition. The owner of the shop buys the books with the intention of keeping them or maybe donating them to the medical school nearby.
T
hings get creepy at this point when a friend of these students is murdered in a close (alley) behind the bookshop. Delaney becomes involved in the investigation – to the dismay of the local police. She finds some very old scalpels in the secret warehouse attached to the bookshop. Where do they fit into the case? Or do they fit in at all?

o the old medical books have a place in the plot?
Lost Books and Old Bones
is well-worth the read. I have been to Edinburgh and probably walked by the spot where this fictional bookshop would have been. Since Delaney is from Kansas, those around her indoctrinate her into all things Scottish which adds to the delight of the story - and there is enough suspense to keep the pages turning.
