he graphic novel seems to be a hot medium for coming of age memoirs. The format makes non-fiction highly readable, while the artwork helps convey the angst of teenage years and brings the story to life.

s a graphic artist, Tillie Walden was very smart to choose this medium for
Spinning
. Throughout this long graphic novel, we see Tillie coming into her own against a backdrop of competitive ice skating. The stark art conveys both the cold of the ice rink and the skater's isolation, whether factual or perceived.
T
he whole piece is rather desolate, but it works. I cannot imagine Tillie Walden presenting her story any other way.
