The graphic novel seems to be a hot medium for coming of age memoirs. The format makes non-fiction highly readable, while the artwork helps convey the angst of teenage years and brings the story to life.

As a graphic artist, Tillie Walden was very smart to choose this medium for Spinning. Throughout this long graphic novel, we see Tillie coming into her own against a backdrop of competitive ice skating. The stark art conveys both the cold of the ice rink and the skater's isolation, whether factual or perceived.

The whole piece is rather desolate, but it works. I cannot imagine Tillie Walden presenting her story any other way.
