W
hat an absolute delight I found the mystery novel
Mood Indigo
by Ed Ifkovic. The author writes from the point of view of Edna Ferber, author of
Show Boat
, though most readers will not remember all the wonderful characters reintroduced to those who enjoy wandering down memory lane.
I
loved my trip. It was nostalgia from start to finish. But the bonus was that a very fine plot came with it.
Mood Indigo
takes place in 1933 and features Broadway's newest sensation, Belinda Ross. (Who remembers the song
Mood Indigo
?) Then, as she very quickly became famous, and had fallen in love, she was murdered! Just when she had grabbed the brass ring.
N
ow we are privy to conversations between Edna Ferber and the very British playwright Noel Coward. Soon, many other names of other famous and infamous celebrities pop in and out of the story. Readers are also reminded of how the Depression affected so many. My father watched a man's body hit the street as he waited at a traffic light. So many were devastated to lose their way of life. Vast fortunes were lost. Not being able to face life without its luxurious amenities, more than a few took that fatal last step.
I
was born in 1932 (yes, I'm 85) and remember so much of the story line. Of course, murder was not in my memory bank.
Mood Indigo
is an intriguing story with suspense, and wonderful characters you would love to have on your Christmas card list. Read and enjoy.
