The Dark Intercept    by Julia Keller Order:  USA  Can Tor, 2018 (2017) Hardcover, Paperback, e-Book     Reviewed by Hilary Williamson I'm a committed fan of Julia Keller's excellent Bell Elkins mysteries, so started reading this first in a YA SF dystopian series with anticipation. It took me a while to get into The Dark Intercept. Earth is dying and the elite have moved above it to the artificial New Earth, a utopia founded by Ogden Crowley. There, the peace is kept by the Intercept, that monitors and harvests emotion. It uses the anguish of their own worst moment as a weapon against anyone attempting to commit a crime. The Intercept was invented by Kendall Mayhew, and in return he and his brother Danny were accepted as immigrants to New Earth. Sadly, Kendall died, but his invention lives on. The heroine of the story is Ogden's daughter, sixteen-year-old Violet Crowley. She is strongly attracted to Danny, now a New Earth cop, but wonders why he returns to face the dangers of Old Earth so often. She monitors his actions from Protocol Hall, where she is assigned to work. Violet decides that she needs to find out his secret, and journeys to Old Earth herself, though this is forbidden by her father. Meanwhile, rumors abound that someone has found a way to outsmart the Intercept. As this escalates into outright revolt, Violet learns of her dead mother's involvement with the Mayhews, and how she felt about the Intercept. This changes everything.
