I never really much liked short stories. I've always wanted the whole works - character sketches, plot, colorful scenes, a mystery buried in the prose, and the promise of another book in the series I was reading.

Then I tried to write a short story and had a blast. Thought I couldn't do it until I did do it. Wrote quite a few. They didn't intrigue anyone but me. But I began to understand what it took to write a story and keep my audience interested. It's not easy but writing those short mysteries was very satisfying.

With Deadly Housewives, edited by Christine Matthews, the reader gets to enjoy fourteen known writers' works and exercise their own ability to solve the mystery presented to them. Well known authors contributed their short stories for this anthology – Sara Paretsky, Nevada Barr, Denise Mina and Marcia Muller, just a name a few.

You'll cheer for the woman who shuts up her mother-in-law, not an easy task. Creepy neighbors sneak into a story. Mustn't forget cheating husbands. I hoped a cheating boyfriend would garner a comment. One woman must watch out for a fickle female friend. Out-of-control kids rate a spot in the lineup.

Obtain a copy and indulge. You'll laugh and cheer the characters on. Good reading by good authors.
