Brooklyn Wars: An Erica Donato Mystery    by Triss Stein Order:  USA  Can Poisoned Pen, 2017 (2017) Softcover, e-Book      Reviewed by Mary Ann Smyth Brooklyn Wars, the fourth of a series by Triss Stein, takes its readers back to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, active during World War II . The Yard employed thousands, most of whom lived in its vicinity, thus making the area a force of its own. The author says that the incredible history of the Yard inspired her to write a mystery novel using it as a major character. 'There was abundant drama, conflict, glory and crime and I wanted to tell some of the stories of people who built it, the people who watched it die and of the past coming back into the present.' As the modern mystery opens, the three hundred acres which the Yard occupied is to be sold for redevelopment. Of course no decision of this magnitude can be brought about without controversy. The very night of a public meeting, a power broker is murdered. Erica Donato, who holds down several jobs and is writing her Ph.D. dissertation about changes in city neighborhoods, is questioned by the police. She has been doing extensive research on the Yard and comes under suspicion. The mystery is well-plotted, the characters just what the reader wants them to be, and the Yard itself comes to life with the author's realistic depictions of the vast expanse it occupies. A good and satisfying read. I'm looking forward to the fifth of the series.
