I
have always enjoyed Patricia Cornwell's books.
Chaos
is no exception even though it takes a different slant on the world of crime. If forensics appeal to you, boy, this is the book for you.
D
r. Kay Scarpetta and her investigative partner Pete Marino are called to the scene of a dead cyclist. Here is where we all become a part of their team. From stringing the Crime Scene tape to the final act of releasing the body for burial, we read of the almost unbelievable care that is taken to first identify the body and then to do painstaking investigation of the scene where the body was found.
N
othing is left to speculation. From stray loose hairs to notation of the particulars of the scene – in this case, a local park. The brutality of the death, of course, indicates murder, not an accident. Back at the morgue, scrapings from under the victim's fingernails are taken in case of defensive action. We can almost hear the buzz of the Stryker saw that parts the top of the skull from the head so that the brain can be examined. Nothing is left to chance.
K
ay and Pete have a close working relationship. And have worked together long enough to be able to, at one time, have a short romantic spree. They both recognized the futility of working and loving each other at the same time. Kay's exceedingly intelligent niece Lucy comes in handy with her skills, including piloting her own helicopter.
I
found
Chaos
to be extremely interesting. It may not be your cup of tea. But with an author of Patricia Cornwell's stature, it's worth giving it a try.
