He is the son of legendary Sheriff Burton Steel who is dying of Lou Gehrig's disease. Buddy works homicide. He's a rather off the cuff policeman in that he never wears a uniform and conducts his own investigations with only the help he asks for. His bosses don't approve of his tactics, but he gets good results so they leave him alone. Previously with the LAPD, Buddy now works in Freedom, a coastal community north of Los Angeles, to be near his father. When he learns that the local world-renowned minister's wife has disappeared, he jumps in to search for her with both feet. Soon Buddy learns that more than a missing wife is at stake here. Buddy is a dedicated cop who tries to keep his father interested in his cases to keep the man's spirits up. Buddy is very likable, and a good son, although he and his father don't see eye to eye. He finds himself falling for a woman who might be involved in the missing wife's case. And he has a great sense of humor that rankles those he must work with. Missing Persons caught my interest on the first page. The only thing I could possibly say negatively about this book is that it is too short. I wanted more. The author, Michael Brandman, in collaboration with actor Tom Selleck, co-wrote and produced nine Jesse Stone movies. Jesse Stone was a character created by deceased writer Robert B. Parker. Brandman has produced more than forty motion pictures written by well-known names in the movie industry. I truly look forward to the next mystery with Buddy Steel. I enjoyed every page of this one.
