A puppy ran by and seven year-old Lissie chased it. By the time Lissie got back to the lawn, Janey's doll was missing. And so was Janey! Their mother, whom everyone called Miss Sorrel, never gave up hope of finding her little girl. For all those years, on the date of Janey's disappearance, Miss Sorrel ran an ad asking if anyone had seen Janey's doll. It was a one-of-a-kind doll made in Janey's image. Someone appeared at the house who had what could have been that very same doll – rather the worse for wear. But the woman, who wanted the reward money that was offered for the doll, ran away when questioned. Miss Sorrel and her next door neighbor had been making and repairing dolls for years and never gave up hope that they would find Janey's doll along with Janey. The plot is rife with what if's and maybes and keeps the reader wondering if Janey just might reappear. A surprise twist proves that what's on the surface is not always the whole story. What had seemed to be truth becomes a fantasy and the fantasy becomes reality. The strong characters move the plot along. It's a good beach read. Though the suspense isn't as strong as I would have liked, You'll Never Know, Dear is well worth the read.
