Author John Bude wrote his very popular English mysteries during the 1930s, which is today considered the Golden Age of Crime Writing. Many of the writers of that time have been re-published recently.

Seems to me that the difference in years of publication is very apparent in this particular case. There's a lot of tell and very little show. With The Lake District Murder, I had a great deal of trouble imagining its scenes, in which the characters trying to solve the mystery were as clouds in the sky - I knew they were there but they made little impression.

The author of this particular novel wove a very complicated and detailed plot. His attention to each and every detail was admirable but it involved too little of the human element. Times do change.
